We certainly don't delete things like this to intentionally make the forum worse. It also has nothing to do with any particular members. We remove messages like this all the time for this type of infraction. In fact, there has been a bit of a history of us deleting topics because of copyright issues - this isn't something new. We would love nothing more than to be able to allow people to cut & paste entire articles from all over the place. It would make for interesting reading, and one would not have to go to other web sites to get this info. The unfortunate reality is that if we want to keep on the right side of the law, we should not allow this. You are welcome to post a small quote of an article: a few sentences or even a paragraph. We would love nothing more than to be able to allow people to cut & paste entire articles from all over the place. It would make for interesting reading, and one would not have to go to other web sites to get this info. The unfortunate reality is that if we want to keep on the right side of the law, we should not allow this.

You are welcome to post a small quote of an article: a few sentences or even a paragraph. But please DO NOT post long excerpts or entire articles. Please also give credit to the source and a link to the site that it came from.

When the US joined the rest of the world (copyright wise), the U.S. law changed -- no notice need not be published; the simple act of creating the work establishes copyright. In other words, every work anyone creates is automatically copyrighted without doing a thing. So, if you are going to copy something created by anyone else, your judgement that they won't really care should be 100% correct (or else). [Edited by: CampKohler at 10/28/2007 3:11:17 AM EST]

That way you avoid all of the copyright issues, plus any credits due to the author are automatic.

Some long posts may be useful or appropriate but to me it should be an opinion or views, not a repeat of what someone else wrote. It's one thing if it's an original post; its another - and I agree with you - if it's copying something someone else has written, especially if it can be found on the internet; in those cases a link is both sufficient and better.

Anyone who posts a real long article on this site is wasting there own time- as I and many other members don't bother to read real long articles! If you want me to read it- I suggest that you keep it short! Links to newsarticles should be used- and if your newspaper link to an article on this web site no longer works- I suggest posting a link to the newspaper site itself- and doing the search from the newspaper's own web site- which of course should work!

Here's a hint - when composing long replies, do your 'typing with two fingers, and proof reading' in another application, like Notepad. Then hit the "Post a Reply" link and copy & past from Notepad into the window here. (you'll have to manually insert links, if you have any, tho). That way you spend very little time in the GB message editor screen and are less likely to be logged out. Just don't copy & paste copyrighted material! (last sentence added in order to stay on topic ;))

Boycott choice two, pick a company and don't buy from that company. If you decide to boycott a company, for it to be effective, it has to be a company that you used in the past, not one that you don't go to. It's fascinating the number of people that say they'll boycott "Husky" or "Skelly" or some brand that either they never use in the first place, or one that's not even in their area. If you intend to boycott the station, stop going there; it's that simple; don't shop there again. But send a letter to the station and to the company explaining why you're boycotting their station, and say which station you intend to use instead. That way they understand they've lost a customer. And include your name and address so they can contact you. Anonymous letters or single boycotters don't make a difference; you have to give them a chance to reply to you either explaining their view, or explaining what they're doing to make you want to shop there again. If you're going to boycott them, you have to give them a chance to fix the situation that you think is wrong.

As for the second item... (Proposed) FAQ #46. I heard about a gas boycott, should I participate in that? There are three kinds of "boycott" commonly proposed: (a) Pick a day and don't buy gas on that day. (b) Pick a company and don't buy gas from that company. (c) Do something to cut down on gas usage (walk, bike, take the bus, car pool; drive at a more efficient speed; combine several short trips into one). Regardless of how many people you can get to participate (even 100% participation), options (a) and (b) don't do any good at all. But they don't do any harm either, so if you feel like you're "making a statement", knock yourself out. Some people think that option (c) won't work either, but this is less clear, and in any case it reduces your personal gas bill for immediate short-term gain. The urban-legend clearinghouse www.snopes.com (a useful resource to check whenever you receive any letter that urges you to "share it with all your friends") discusses the futility of both day-based and brand-based boycotts. In this case it doesn't matter whether you go there with a forum link or by typing the URL manually; it fails either way. But I don't think that justifies breaking the rules. If the forum posting included a short excerpt in addition to the link, then you can use a search engine to see if the full article is available at some other source (or within the search engine's cache). And if not, then that's unfortunate, but I'll just get on with my life.

It's a simple alternative to a link.
