You might also try posting to your local forum category (that would be the top one on the main forum page) if you're interested in getting to know people in your own area. (All of the other forum categories are shared by all of the location-specific sites, which is why you can be posting from OhioGasPrices.com and get a response from people in other states or provinces.) Here in the San Jose metro area, we have regular face-to-face meets.
You could also look around for forum threads that are largely social even if they're in someone else's locality. For example, I'm a regular in the online Toronto Cafe.

There are a few grouchy members who delight in barking at newbies who ask “stupid” questions. Pay them no mind; most of us here will be glad to help any new member who asks for it.
