I do not fear it. I just cannot afford the high cost of dental care. It is outrageously priced now. I have an occasional cleaning but any work that needs to be done, has to be let go as I certainly do not have the funds. It is very true what people have written here about the dentist stating that X-rays need to be taken all the time. I found this to be true.

I went for a consult to a general dentist a few months ago. He wanted to take one X-ray. The cost was $50 for one film. I told him that I will wait for my cleaning and have the needed X-rays at that time. I could not believe the price for that one damn X-ray.

I used to hate the dentist but then found one who was really patient with me. I've been faithful every 6 months for 8 years now!

I have a huge fear of anything dental related. I had to have a dental implant a few years ago after losing a tooth due to faulty root canal work (the dentist was said to have skipped the country because so many people were after him because he screwed their teeth up). After going through a dental implant with no sedation, I now fear even a simple cleaning. The oral surgeon who did the implant was very nice, and his staff was great, but it's really put me off dental work now.

I had a couple dental surgeries as a child. My parents always explained things logically so I wasn't afraid. The xrays of today have such little radiation, I believe they're safe. I would have lost all of my upper teeth by age 16, if a dental xray hadn't caught a huge abscess. The dentist couldn't believe I had no pain.

Since menopause hit I tend to build up more plaque, so I go in every four months for cleaning. Instead of scraping; they have this new sound machine where sound waves break up the tartar. Very cool. I also discovered using the toothpaste, Aquafresh Extreme Clean Deep Action really helps reduce tartar build up.

No. When I was a military dental asst., I learned how to take care of my teeth. Since then (30 years ago), I haven't had a cavity since. Once in awhile a filling might crack and need replacement, but that's it. I guess I'm lucky.

I don't have a problem going to the dentist or much pain with extraction of a tooth and I don't take prescription pain medicines.

I don't hate or fear the dentist. It always helps when the dental hygentist is good looking. My dentist only takes x-rays once every 18 months. I have only had one cavity in my life.

I know what you mean about the x rays. The last time I went was April & they did full x rays & cleaning & it cost me over $350.00 We're retired in our late 70's. That's a bit much. May have to look around for better price. Wrench just got new dentures, about $1,000.

Nope. I don't understand why people fear dentists. It's not like anything hurts. The most painful procedure I've had was when I first got my braces on last October. Side note: if you have kids that need braces, make sure they get them no later than 16 years old. Orthodontic treatment is much faster and a lot less painful than when you're an adult. I know this from first hand experience. >_<

YES! but I go anyway. When I was about 11 I was being fitted for a temporary crown and the dentist dropped it down my throat!!! Scared for life.

I hate to go even for a cleaning. If I didn't make a 6 month appointment when I leave, I'd probably never go back. I'm due in a couple of weeks.

Medical alcohol does that but I've become desensitized to it as I age. About the only time I get more alcohol than I like is when they scrub my arm at the blood bank.

When I was a child, a whiff of the stuff would put this "something is wrong" look on my face. I had speech therapy in the nurse's office and it smelled like alcohol once. The speech therapist was aware something was wrong but I would not admit to what was wrong. Maybe she could have opened the window.

I just wish I would stop tensing up when there is nothing to get tensed up about. (I am not the ideal patient when sharp instruments are concerned.)

IMHO, dentists should dump their Pelton & Crane torture instruments and buy their procedure chairs where the blood bank gets theirs.

My dentist has a new digital X-ray that runs at a fraction of the radiation required by traditional silver chemistry. It also gets rid of a lot of hazardous waste.
