Emissions testing: oh what a joy!

GasBuddy Blog -- The day I long dreaded, and perhaps others equally hate, is finally here. I received a notice that my vehicle must be tested to meet emissions standards. While it's an annoyance for a car enthusiast like me who modifies their car, I'm certainly not alone. In fact, 33 states have some sort of emissions program either because they've opted to, or because the EPA requires them to.

While some states have partial emissions tests based on where you live, in some states any and all motorists are required. We all know (or should) that California has among the most stringent air pollution standards, so its no surprise that vehicles there must undergo a smog check every two years. The state quit doing inspections some 20 years ago. I didn't mind doing it & it did keep a lot of derelict vehicles off the roads. A driver had 10 days to correct any violations or defects found, & then had to be re-inspected before driving the vehicle any more. They could bring those back & employ a bunch of people & help the economy.

But it didn't really seem to help that much. Most ppl drove a bad vehicle till close to inspection time, fixed it up just enough, then back to driving it until the next inspection (if it was going to make it).

But those expensive devices have all been ripped out and trashed. AWD cars made it impossible to do the test.

The joke is that because of budget cuts all other safety testing has been dropped. If you pass the emissions you get your sticker - even if the brakes are not working, no horn, no lights, bald tires, cracked windshield are all ok.

Testing is done in Portland and Medford, not state wide and they will check for modifications to the engine or exhaust. Breathe cleaner air or brrreathe the pollution. Vehicle inspections cost money (for 1975 or newer), supposedly to support the program. I remember when vehicles were allowed to operate as they wanted, sometimes you couldn't walk down the sidewalk or get near a road without smelling strong exhaust fumes from car after car. Stinky! Stinky! Stinky! Not anything like today when you hardly ever smell the exhaust of any kind after they pass by or when you walk behind. 'Coming out of the closet' Barry likes that! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012

I knew EXACTLY what my car needed before I drove it through! and also what it needed when I got back home !!!! Back then I had RWD CHRYSLERS and they ALWAYS PASSED !!!!
