Is 'Pay per Mile' the way to go?

GasBuddy Blog -- If there’s one issue where states large and small from the Pacific to the Atlantic stand in solid agreement, it’s that our Interstate system, highways, bridges and secondary roads have been neglected for too long.

As you would expect, the discussion gets dicey when politicos start debating how to pay for it.

Rest assured, we taxpayers will pay the price if we want safe and uncongested roads, bridges and highways. It now boils down to the terms of payment; how much can be squeezed from us and how often. For many years it’s been the federal gas tax (18.4 cents per gallon) that primarily pays for interstate repairs but that’s been a rapidly diminishing revenue source and that’s why the government’s attention has...

Electric cars don't use gas, but they do use the same roads and bridges. Pay by the mile makes more sense, and it's fine by me as long as it's non intrusive. They don't need to know where or when I drive, with an expensive GPS system. They can look at the odometer when I renew my tags once a year.

If they do not get things accomplished and work together to fix the problems, they don't get paid -- This way everyone gets screwed, politicians and taxpayers alike.

We drive an EV and it's fair that we pay our share. This new way to tax for roads should NOT be a general sales tax.

If all taxes were removed from gasoline... then a pay per mile (or toll) would be a reasonable way to go. Gasoline and electric vehicles would all pay to drive on the highways. The key will be to fix the rate across the nation so that all pay equally!!! But bottom line... I do not see it coming to pass as too many legislators in Washington love their cushy position to much to alienate their voters on such a topic.

NO. Well, specifically if big oil collects the taxes and pockets it as profit when they really didn't need to... Corporate Profits do not help repair roads. That would go away with a per-mile tax. And implementing a system that requires building a massive accounting system seems like a wasteful big-government move. That said, we need system that spreads the cost of road-maintenance amongst alternative fuel users and traditional gasoline users. Or, if we do not tax alternative fuel users, that becomes a further incentive for people to switch to alternate fuels.

Use current funds for what they were collected for and enforce the laws already in existence before you create new ones that won't be enforced either. Our current law makers think new legislation is the answer to every question and every problem. They are to chicken "bleep" to do the right thing.
