Yes , we are witnessing a lot of teenage accidents involving drug and alcohol abuse. I would think by now they would have an intensive drug and alcohol course besides the driving education class.

Drunk driving is what it is.. Nothing to do with "The Perfect Storm" I trust that he is very sorry for what happened, I know I could not live with myself if I took even one life or just injured someone.. BUT all of our actions in life have a re-action and consequences.. We have to pay for our mistakes in one form or another.. I'm not sure if letting him off to just go on his way to College or whatever would be the way to go.. Albeit it is not for us to judge !!

Turn him loose and put him on a public speaking tour in lieu of jail time.
This is genuine repentance. This is also genuine forgiveness on the part of the victims' families. In most cases, "Doing The Right Thing" means locking him up for a long time. This case appears to be quite different.
Your Honor, "Do The Right Thing"

In this day there is no excuse for drunk driving. None whatsoever. The punishment needs to be severe. Most drunk drivers do not get hurt themselves but they end up maiming and killing others and destroying other families simply because they are irresponsible or do not care that driving drunk can result in accidents. Worse than drunk driving are the morons who text and drive.

All DUI's need to have a penalty like this, even if someone doesn't get killed.

To Insightcruzer in Oakland....What makes ytou think he will never again drive drunk? Most drunk drivers are repeat offenders, and if they do not get a severe punishment the first time, they will drive drunk again. I had a neighbor who said that he drives drunk because he "knows" that if caught the punishment will not be harsh. Non-violent crime?? Did you not read that he killed two people??? if that is a non-violent crime, what is?

"Takunda's not to blame for this. It was a perfect storm. Everything that happened, happened, and it's not all on Takunda,"
It was a perfect storm. Everything that happened, happened? WFT is THAT supposed to mean? What the hell is wrong with this guy? Takunda WAS doing the driving, and he WAS drunk so therefor it IS all on him and he IS to blame. I think Mr See is saying this becuase he may have been intimidated by the Takunda family.

Amazing that the relatives of those killed were so forgiving.
Drunk drivers, Texting drivers and all other distracted drivers should have their vehicles confiscated to protect the rest of us serious drivers, our driving families and our driving friends.

The punishment seem to be jail time and hind sight of a “bright student shouldn’t have driven” is not going to help. But maybe, just maybe, since the two families have asked the court not to sentence him to jail, maybe he could have been given the chance to make something of himself and do more again drinking & driving. Maybe in a way allow him to dedicate himself to the cause – or force him to dedicate his life to it; instead of jail!?

I agree that in this case incarceration is pointless. it won't address his drinking, and it costs money to house a nonviolent offender who would never again engage in the activity that landed him in court. Rather, for the 30 months he could do public service, attend a rehab and counseling program,

30 months is not much of a sentence after killing 2 people and injuring others. This was not a freak unavoidable accident. The guy was driving drunk!
