Aging Boomers Won't Wreck America's Roads: Here's Why

The Car Connection -- We've all heard about Baby Boomers and how they're hurtling toward retirement. We've also read numerous studies that show older drivers are more accident prone when they get behind the wheel.

So, should we fear the thought of this massive generation tumbling into senior-citizendom (joining their parents, who are living longer thanks to the miracles of modern medicine)? Will the highways of tomorrow be strewn with fender-benders and pileups, caused by the Me Generation?

Not at all, says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

I don't see anything wrong with needing to take a driver's exam more often after reaching advanced age. I'm not sure what that age is but insurance company data probably would peg it at about age 75. I know people don't want to give up driving but most would rather do that than live with the guilt of injuring or killing another person. I think most older people know when it's time to hang up the keys.

It's not necessarily the age of the driver, it's how responsible and responsive the person is.

No, a statement like this is based on statistics. There will always be exceptions. The incident where an elderly driver steps on the gas instead of the brake and rams thru a store front will always make the news — but it is a rare event. Elderly drivers may be a bit overly cautious but in so doing they tend be more of an obstacle on the road than an overt hazard. I’ll take my chances with grandpa using extra time to complete a left turn compared to junior texting his girlfriend at the same intersection.

Most of the elderly I see on the road can't see over the steering wheel, don't signal for turns, and drive 5mph to 10mph under the speed limit. Talk about a hazard.

OLDER DRIVERS HAVE ALWAYS HAD SOME SLIGHT MANEUVERING ISSUES... YEARS AGO, IT WAS USUALLY A MAILBOX OR THREE... NOW, IT'S TOTAL CHAOS ON THE ROADWAYS... Of all places for this to come from: the auto insurance industry. And what are these people good for. Taking your money because the seem to have this self appointed right to play with your money. Then they turn around and compile massive amounts of worthless 'information?' just to justify their taking your money and playing with it!

Calif took my granddad's DL away from him when he was 85. My mom took my dad's driving privileges away when he was 76. Both for good reason.

The worst drivers are still the youngest ones there is no doubt. For every old fool that mistakes his gas pedal for the brake there is a young fool that thinks he is a F1 pilot in a pickup truck.
