Author of US fracking study had gas industry ties: watchdog

omglobe.com -- A university study that claimed fracking for gas deep beneath the Earth’s surface did not cause water contamination was led by a US professor with financial ties to the gas industry, a watchdog group said Friday. Lead author Charles “Chip” Groat, of the University of Texas, told reporters when the research on hydraulic fracturing was presented at a major science conference in Canada in February that the university had turned down all industry funds for the study.

However, an investigation by the Public Accountability Initiative (PAI) found that Groat himself has been on the board of the Houston-based Plains Exploration and Production Company for several years.

Groat was paid more than $400,000 in cash and stock by the company in 2011, and holds a near $1.6 million stake in the compan

no surprise. Been saying that for a long time. Look who funds the study you read. What's their interest behind paying for a study?

UT is heavily subsidize by Big Oil/Gas in most departments. Anything they publish should be looked at with a very critical eye!

No surprise at all, as one more industry paid 'scientific' shill is exposed. Big money trail from the corporate hqs in Houston and Dallas direct to several educational shills like Dr. "Chip". When the father of modern techniques for horizontal hyDraulic fracturing recently announced that this process should be closely controlled and well regulated, he was not kidding!

Just watch for more 'spin' on this from shills like the industry's API and the resident gas and oil shills here!

It's all too true that money from these industries will greatly bias any "research" being conducted and published. The corporation has final say for all released of information, especially publications. Any negative data and findings will never be published.

"Scientific" studies (like politicians) will end up saying whatever their financier wants them to say. If the data doesn't match the predetermined outcome, they will use a different data sample that does. There are very few independent studies are not financed by someone (a person, company or political entity) who does not have a stake in the outcome.

BIG GREED OIL & GAS caught again with their pants down.

Again we see that the only way this industry can get the results they want is to buy deceit.

As frackers rape America, they're turning our soil, water & air into a huge industrial waste heap.

All in the name of their profit and greed.

Water is essential to life.

The Facts are the Facts, doesn't matter which side gives them. Our job is to try and interrpret which are facts and which are B.S.. Just like the Global Warming fiasco.

So what? The EPA under liberal Administrator Lisa Jackson, had reported that there was no evidence that hydraulic fracturing contaminated groundwater.

The University is negligent in not vetting Dr. Groat prior to publication of this study; however, he may be guilty of intentional misrepresentation and violations of academic ethics, which is far more serious. If that is proven, he should be fired immediately.

PAI needs to investigate both sides of that argument; interestingly they seem to only report on the oil industry side.....

Professional interest ties are fine, but financial ties ruins all credibility. If a statement of this fact of financial ties was stated as a part of the study, then accept the study as presented.

And authors of studies that tell us why government should control our lives have ties to government that tries to control our lives. If paying for a study influences the study, that works both ways.
