Black boxes in cars likely to become standard

Autoweek -- Most people are aware of event data recorders, commonly called “black boxes,” in airplanes. Many people don't realize a variety of passenger cars also have these devices -- and they may be mandatory for 2015 model year cars.

There are black boxes in about 96 percent of cars for the 2013 model year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. So having them in all cars isn't a big change, but along with that mandatory ruling will likely come some additional parameters for what data is collected and how it is shared. The details are what have civil-rights groups and some legislators concerned.

The use of black boxes in cars is not new. They've actually been in vehicles for more than 20 years as a way for automakers to access information about the car's movement ...

The black boxes are recording whatever and don't expect it to get any better! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

They will be free of charge to the "less fortunate", paid for by additional surcharges/taxes on the "rich", so the politicos in DC can determine if your lifestyle is "extravagant", leading to an "extravagance tax". The idiots in charge in DC are all about wealth distribution. That is, OUR wealth, not theirs!

I agree with being able to analyze data to further improve the safety features/technology of a vehicle, but the release of data to third parties (insurance companies, law enforcement and others) must be absolutely clarified and regulated to protect the privacy of the individual.

This is what Road & Track said about them: “An automotive EDR stores vehicle and occupant information in that brief period (seconds, not minutes) before, during and after airbag deployment. Think of a 15-second data spool being continuously monitored and—only in the event of a serious crash—being captured in memory, typically part of airbag-management electronics. “The primary purpose of an EDR is to assess automotive safety hardware; specifically, to gauge the efficacy of airbags and their deployment strategies. Succinctly, if an airbag doesn't go off, the EDR has nothing to report.” These statements make the concept a whole lot less scary IMO.
