Car-hacking: Remote access and other security issues

ComputerWorld -- It's not time for full-on panic, but researchers have already successfully applied brakes remotely, listened into conversations and more.

A disgruntled former employee of Texas Auto Center chose a creative way to get back at the Austin-based dealership: He hacked into the company's computers and remotely activated the vehicle-immobilization system, which triggered the horn and disabled the ignition system in more than 100 of the vehicles. The dealership had installed the system in their cars as a way to deal with customers who fell behind on their payments.

Police arrested the man and charged him with breach of computer security. His legal status was unclear as of our deadline for this story.

Note that he didn't hack the software in the car. He hacked into the dealer's computers, which were already set up to disable the cars.

If they forced the car makers to use open source programming these bugs would be removed long before they got into actual hardware. The buying public just won't stand for this remote garbage. Lets put the shoe on the other foot. Would car dealers like to be shutdown remotely for reneging on a deal, providing shoddy service, or delivering a lemon? Well then they shouldn't be allowed to remote deactivate a car, period!

Seems a bit excessive to have the devices installed on vehicles. What about the cash buyers? Lots of Big Brother shenanigans.

"The dealership had installed the system in their cars as a way to deal with customers who fell behind on their payments."

shouldn't the dealership get charged themselves for installing such a device in the first place.

I think they are underestimating the risk in this article. There enough people who just want to create havoc and chaos instead of being productive members of society.

I used to worry about nations with nukes destroying the world as a child. Now 50 years later I think some idiot "Hacker" will do the dirty deed.

As in movies, the brakes can be de-applied remotely to cause a murder by accident.
