Dakota flare shows gas waste in US

The Economic Times -- Besides crude, North Dakota's shale wells are producing prodigious quantities of natural gas, much of which is being flared off because of the lack of gas-gathering pipelines and infrastructure across the vast empty spaces of the northern plains, prompting bitter complaints about wasting energy and greenhouse emissions.
Widespread flaring is clearly visible in colour-enhanced satellite images from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and has sparked a string of critical articles in the Christian Science Monitor ("Thanks to North Dakota, US waste of natural gas grows rapidly"), New York Times ("In North Dakota, flames of wasted natural gas light the prairie") and other publications.

it seems a shame to waste all that gas, pollute the air and get nothing in return. there has to be a better way.

Why not build a small gas fired electrical generating plant
here, quickly so the gas is not wasted.

with nat gas prices up over a dollar from 1.91 to well over 3.00, someone should be economically motivated to build a facility to harness all this gas being "flared" or wasted.

I remember as a kid (1970s) seeing the gas flares at wells and asking my dad why they wasted that gas. He told me because there was not enough there to make it worth collecting
Don't know if that is true or not

This is not a new practice and I've always wondered why they don't just store it locally and truck it out.

Nothing new here. Just greenies going crazy.

Let the greenies pay for the equipment to stop the flaring and collecting the gas.

What? You won't? You can't?

Join the club. It costs more to recover the gas than the gas itself is worth.
