Despite Attention, Public's Opinion on Fracking Doesn't Budge

Albany Bureau -- -- The hot-button issue has spurred rallies, full-page advertisements, plenty of radio and television spots and too many headlines to count.

Despite all of it, the public's opinion of hydraulic fracturing in New York has barely budged.

A Quinnipiac University poll released this week found 44 percent of New York voters oppose drilling for natural gas in the resource-rich Marcellus Shale region, compared to 43 percent in favor -- an even split given the slight margin of error.

Since August 2011, the shift has only been by no more than four percentage points, with various Siena College surveys finding a similarly consistent split.

"Whether it's a Quinnipiac poll or a Siena poll, every time I've seen the question asked -- no matter how you ask the question -- New Yorkers are virtually evenly

My former post on this article has disappeared (censorship, anyone?)
My take on this is that there is an urban/rural divide on this issue. Policy makers have banned fracking in New York based on environmental scare tactics which are not borne out by scientific evidence, to the detriment of people in rural areas of NY who are in deep financial trouble, while a few miles away across the state line, gas development has been the solution to the crisis in Pennsylvania. The radical environmental position, however, seems to get a lot of traction in non-rural areas, which, in New York, are home to a huge majority of the population. A good look at the junk science behind the anti-fracking zealots can be found at http://www.aednet.org/aednews/index_full_story.cfm?id=10928637

Maybe public opinion would change if we could get the real facts about fracking instead of biased bits and pieces to promote either sides agenda. The public is generally going to be against something they don't fully understand.

Too many unknowns for people to figure it out, uncertainty breeds fear, and fear defeats logic.

Both sides are probably stretching things... though it's obvious fracking is terrible for the environment.

There are two quotes that I think of with this situation:

Donald Gannon - 'Where facts are few, experts are many.'

and one attributed to Albert Einstein - 'If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts.'

More research needs to be done to on the topic of fracking. With more research people's minds will change.

It seems those that can gain from drilling support it while those that will not gain oppose it.

Kind of makes you wonder if the glass is half full or half empty. History books will have plenty written about the issue in the future. So until then just keep on drilling.
