Don't get used to low gas prices, experts say

Journal Sentinel -- Gassing up has been a bit less painful lately, thanks to booming petroleum production in the U.S. and lower demand.

But with the "fiscal cliff" mostly straightened out, some forecasts are calling for gasoline prices to begin rising again and to probably hit three and a half bucks later this year as the economy continues to recover and folks put more miles on their vehicles.

On Wednesday the average price for a gallon of regular was $3.18 in Milwaukee and $3.21 statewide, according to AAA Wisconsin. That's 17 cents cheaper than a month ago.

Industry analysts are not anticipating pump prices to drop any lower but instead begin to steadily increase.

So motorists expecting fuel prices to dip below $3 will likely be disappointed. The last time Wisconsin drivers paid less than $3 at the pump

If instead you are interested in diesel fuel or heating oil: UHN. [Note: all the normal costs and warnings and considerations regarding an ETF apply.]

I have Not seen low gas prices at the pump for a very long time. Gas prices just squeeked below $3/gal (Costco 2.98 for one day and $2.99 after that) but gas prices are up and will be going up more. The price at the pump needs to go down to $2/gallon - $3, $3.50/gallon or *$4.00 is Not the new low! Higher fuel prices, the more this economy will be in stress and fail to recover very much. More Refineries are Not the answer, Stop exporting fuel is! The US ‘oil and natural gas resources’ belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Speculators, manipulators and the banks continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump for their personal greedy benefit. 'Coming out of the Closet' Sneeky's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the jobs are Not here. Sneeky's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continue to be down! Thanks to the Mindless Sheep that voted this bozo back in office. Diesel is nearly $1.00 a gallon more than regular gasoline. Earlier this year diesel was 10 to 15 cents a gallon lower than regular gas, so who is the head manipulator?

But to be honest, I see no reason to do anything but expect slowly but steadily rising overall prices. It's been this way since the end years of the CLINTON administration, when I saw 77 cent a gallon gas just off the expressway – the prices at the end of 2008 were precipitous drop-offs from the Summer prices (this website has a graphing program onsite that allows you to graph prices; you'll see prices hit a high in Summer 2008 and collapse in time for the 2008 election).
