Ford talking to EPA about hybrids' fuel economy

ap -- Ford said Friday that it's talking to the government about the fuel economy of its hybrid cars after a report suggested they're falling short of targets.

Consumer Reports said last week that Ford's new C-Max hybrid didn't meet the published fuel economy of 47 miles per gallon, averaging 38 miles per in the magazine's testing. Other hybrids — including the Ford Fusion and Toyota Prius V — have also fallen short in the magazine's tests.

Ford said it followed the Environmental Protection Agency's guidelines when it set its fuel economy standards. But the EPA's hybrid tests don't exactly mimic real-world driving. For example, Consumer Reports said it measures highway fuel use for a car going 65 miles per hour, but the EPA's highway test speed averages 48 mph.

Why is it any different than a normal car's testing protocol? Hybrid or not, all cars are driven on the same roads.

Why? B/c these things aren't tested under real life conditions. The vehicles are driven on a test road, then the figures are extrapolated.

Consumer Reports have been around a long time and they KNOW what they are talking about for good vehicles and for true mph and mpg testing! Find out what the good vehicles are - new or used. EPA Fuel Economy? Talk to Hyundia and Kia about their EPA fuel economy! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

Not saying that I blame Ford, at all. Bill Gates learned his lesson when the "government" came after him for being a monopoly because he gained a whopping 30+% of the free browser market (I said the FREE browser market). Nowadays, companies recognize that they have to have lobbyists in DC that watch the pols and protect their interests. Very sad that we can't just have a society where the government protects our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I mean, I thought that paying off corrupt government officials was something that only happened in socialist countries. Oh! Riiiiight.

Calculate instead the price per mile or PPM. This allows you to compare hybrid, EV, CNG, diesel, and gasoline engines. Diesel is higher, but generally provides more power and better fuel efficiency. EV's don't use gas at all, so a "gallon" measure is ridiculous from the start. PPM (or PPKm in Canada) provides a consistent baseline for all energy sources, MONEY.

The reputation and trust of the consumer is on the line. I believe Americans are looking for products they can trust and believe in.

I have never bought a vehicle because of the rated mileage, I buy the ones that are capable of doing what I need safely.

Whether or not Ford is actually wrong remains to be determined, but they certainly should be made aware of the fact that someone is watching and checking.
