Looking For New Ideas On Gas Prices? Avoid The Senate
Thursday, May 08, 2008
CBS News -- (The Politico) While gas hits $4 a gallon at gas pumps across the country, senators from both parties are reverting to talking points that haven't changed in years.

It was clearly gas price rhetoric day in the Senate, and Republicans took the first shot, proposing drilling in Alaska, building more refineries, drilling off the coasts and turning coal to liquid fuel.

"We have a bill that's all production," said Sen. Pete V. Domenici (R-N.M.), who engineered $14 billion in tax breaks for energy companies the last time Congress passed a major energy bill in 2005. These were all well worn ideas that have fallen short in previous energy debates.

Democrats quickly fired back, and to no one's surprise, they attacked OPEC, "greedy oil traders" and the amorphous bogeyman known as "Big Oil."

I haven't seen any discussion on totally controlling the oil supply, production, refining or distribution of oil products in the US. What's wrong with nationalizing the oil industry. Venezuela's president had the right idea but the wrong application assuming control of oil in his country. Getting a hand on the costs would greatly benefit consumers and businesses that must rely on oil for their livelyhood. Carter, with his total deregulation policy, ruined many companies with the thought of lower prices. Instead he brought chaos and disruption. Perhaps a return to regulation is now in order

So we continue to have our lawmakers in a deadlock, which results in nothing happening. Time to replace them.

Briank299 hits the nail on the head. We need to become semi-protectionist at the expense of the world economy. Why should we enrich their coffers? What do they do for us other than provide cheap crap?

Why should the common man also pay through the nose so some stiff in NY or London makes billions off of speculation? This is a true screwing of the U.S. economy by 'speculators' - whomever they are, and government can put an end to that with price controls. I am a capitalist, but there are times it needs to be put in check, and this is one of those times.

The WalMart effect is also right and catching up to us - it's all about demand and supply and as long as China is expanding dramatically, then they will exacerbate this problem immeasurably. How to change that? STOP GOING TO WALMART! It's pretty simple. But then again, where do you go to get cheap clothes for your kids and cheap food? Now that gas is eating into our pockets ever more, it's even harder to avoid WalMart and Target. They've put all the other stores out of business, and they've created their own black hole and its sucking billions out of our economy. We're really screwed unless we get some serious intervention from people who actually give a crap. Clearly no one does except us.

I think it's time for the common man and woman in this country to actually pay attention and participate for the first time in their lives in our government, because it's going to really mess with their world if they don't.

It's nice that they apparently talk about other sources for oil and fuel, for years, but when will action be done.

talk? time for talk has passed, now is the time for action. I expect things to get more expensive, I would just like to see it happen at a more reasonable rate. One that could be absorbed without killing the average american.

Follow the money: find out whom Big Oil is backing in the congressional and presidential sweepstakes, and you'll know the reason for legislative and executive gridlock. Me? I'm supporting any candidate who declines contributions from oil PACs and executives -- and that ain't Hillary!

Let's inundate those over-paid lazy idiots with letters insisting they remove the barriers to drilling for American resources - ANWR and off-shore.

So even if they start drilling in Alaska. Does anyone honestly think the price of Fuel is really going to fall. Really! Fuel price will only go up even if there is more oil available.

Unfortunately, the long-standing, underlying problem behind the stinkin' high gas prices involves THE OIL COMPANIES, THE U.S. AUTO MAKERS, and MANY
FORMER AND PRESENT POLITICIANS.

The Oil Companies have been 'paying off' The U.S. Auto Makers to keep their vehicles in the higher range on gas consumption, and they have been 'paying off' politicians for many decades to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to their unscrupulous practices or we would have and could have had far more fuel-efficient vehicles a long time ago.

Off The Soap Box Now !!!

How is "Big Oil" amorphous? Exxon-Mobil, Shell, BP, Valero, Chevron They have names, and OH BOY! Do they have profits!

Give incentives for engine makers to make more efficient engines (internal cumbustion engines are no better than 30% efficient) and build lighter more aerodynamic cars... and vehicles that burn alternative fuels, preferrably renewable sources.

Wean us away from gasoline and petroleum... or it will only get worse... much worse

There are areas on the north slope that are open for lease outside of ANWR that no one is drilling, use those areas.
-----------------------------------
Jeb Bush's request to the Fed's extended the block on drilling on the offshore shelf around Florida, too close to home.

Because of Republican policies-

Inflation-Adjusted mid point Wages are 1/3rd what they were in 1980.

The Rich Republicans at the top are 1-2000 times richer at the expense of the middle class and poor.
-----------------------------------
They do not need bush's tax cut, they just hire illegal aliens and cut the wages for the middle class.

In the many years before 2006 the Republicans control of our government did not foster increasing the supply of oil.
They also deregulated the markets which has allowed the Speculators freedom to RAISE the price of Crude with no regard to supply and demand.
Another bad thing that happened on their watch is all the Control of fuel to very few companies, no competition.

we have plenty of oil and the speculators know this but they keep raising the price its going to get to the point that we have to make a choice weather eat or buy gas then people will start to kill for it theres no reason for this there needs to be regulations until then we will see a hugh oil shock it will cripple alot of people in this country and the world and there is no reason for it

The answer is lift restrictions on refineries and drilling. Remember there is no shortage of oil, just of processing. I don't see any lines an the gas stations I drive past every day.

"Well you know what, atleast they always make that 3 cent profit by raising their price everyday. I can't raise my paycheck to keep my saving up. So I am don't want to hear about how bad gas stations have it. They always make a profit, no matter how small they claim it is."

If it is so profitable, and the profit comes so easily, why haven't you bought one. There are hunderds for sale.

Why does it take the consumers voice before congress, senate or the president does anything - if anything has been done anyway?

Produce alternative fuels in this country using NON FOOD sources.
Limit the import of OPEC oil and maybe someday we can tell them 'we don't want your stinking oil'........

More domestic production isn't going to lower price because it is sold on the international commodities market at the high bid. Calls for drilling are only thoughtless calls to make more holes and put more tar on beaches and pristine Arctic wilderness.

The answer is NON OIL solutions. We need to develope Hydrogen, Electric cars, Hybreds (fueled with plug ins, and/or diesel / hydrogen fuel cells)

This country needs to set up more wind farms, and build more hydro - electric dams. We also should recyle spent nuke fuel rods, by grinding them up and treating them like raw Uranium. (currently that is against the law (thanks to Dems like Jimmy Carter) If we re-used spent fuel, we would have enough uranium for the next 100 years, and not have to mine a single ounce of uranium. It would also take care of what to do with the spent rods. Seems like a WIN WIN WIN situation (those are hard to find)

Gov't can either Lead or get out of the way. But we certainly don't want to follow the current set of senators. Vote in Nov. And vote against the incumbant. We need a major shake up in Washington. Too bad none of the people running for president are worth a vote. But some are definately worth voting against!

We pay for the gas and car payments for these liberal leeches and this is how they thank us. The conservatives have been trying to allow our oil companies to drill for our own oil and these disgusting, power mad liberal politicians keep saying no. All of you that keep these scum in office have no one but yourselves to blame for high gas prices. You've been suckered and won't admit it.
