Military to test hypersonic jet that could zip across the U.S. in less than 1 hour

the lookout -- A superfast jet that could fly from L.A. to New York City in less than an hour may be one step closer to reality after a key test this week.

The X-51A WaveRider, an unmanned aircraft that could reach speeds up to Mach 6 will be launched from the wing of a B-52 bomber high above the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The WaveRider is expected to zip up into the atmosphere and fly at hypersonic speeds—3,600 mph—for 300 seconds, before breaking up into the ocean.

If successful, if would be the longest jaunt for the test aircraft. The newspaper noted that the development of WaveRider could lead to progress on a passenger jet that could theoretically travel across the U.S. in 46 minutes.

"Attaining sustained hypersonic flight is like going from propeller-driven aircra

ummm... WaveRider waved before it took a ride straight into the Pacific. #3 of 4 down. No telling if the last one will be actually going up in the air.

Wow...accross the country in less than an hour. Now the airline industry has an excuse not to have complimentary drinks and peanuts let alone serve an inflight meal.

Who could afford to fly on it? There would be one heck of fuel surcharge.

Like that'll happen. ANY aircraft that can fly that fast will be used ONLY by the military for several decades, especially as a high-value, high-priority transport aircraft.

Can't we just use F-16's and add a few passenger seats?

Can you imagine how much fuel something like that would use just getting to that speed? :(

The technology will only ever be used for nuclear and other explosive payloads - never 'people' payloads.

SR71 flew from LA to DC in 64 minutes and NY to London in less than 2hrs, and it was built in the 60s.

New York to LA in 46 minutes does not seem useful or necessary. I wonder what it uses for fuel and what kind of mileage it gets. Only the military can afford it; time to cut the Pentagon’s budget.

The Pentagon said it spent about $2 billion on technology and engineering around hypersonic flight over the last decade, the Times reports. This program is estimated to cost $140 million, according to Globalsecurity.org, a military policy research website.

I have not been in an airplane since the 1970's I sure would not want to fly in an airplane flying at super sonic speed.
