Ministers join speed camera debate in St. Louis County

St Louis Post Dispatch -- ST. LOUIS COUNTY • A group of local ministers today called on County Council members to put the debate over speed enforcement cameras before voters.

The ministers don't believe the cameras have made roads safer and argue that the tickets they generate are hurting people who can least afford them. They want the County Council to place the issue of regulating speed cameras on a ballot.

"We certainly think they need to put an end to these things just being used as speed traps," said the Rev. B.T. Rice of New Horizon Christian Church, who organized a news conference this morning at Shalom Church City of Peace in Florissant with eight other ministers from north St. Louis County.

"If you're speeding and/or driving recklessly, you're putting much more in jeopardy than the cost of a speeding ticket. Say for instance, oh I don't know, killing someone, ruining lives and going to jail! If you're going to speed, then don't be shocked by a ticket."

If I'm "speeding" in a place with an speed limit set artificially low for the purpose of revenue generation, am I really putting anyone in danger? Really?

Ha!

"Don't break the law and you get no ticket fine."

You really think it's that simple? What if the law is wrong? What if the reasoning for the law is for revenue generation and not for public safety?

Actually, in Colorado, the legislature realized that speed cameras were simply a cash grab and they acted to restrict it.

It's hard though, when you have so many folks out there who don't understand what is going on with this issue - and don't care. Perhaps we should crack down on jetski scofflaws, next.

"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws." - Floyd Ferris in Atlas Shrugged

Love it when people who vote for and elect big government and their ideals are now moaning and groaning about it.

The ministers are concerned that money that would have gone to the church is being redirected to municipal coffers through the speed camera ticketing of church goers.

Cameras are usually installed by a party who gets a cut of the ticket money in one way or another. Sending a ticket to the registered (plate) owner does not ensure that the person who broke the law pays.

The only reason they care is because it cuts in to church profit when the congregation is spending their money on fines instead of dropping it in the church bank.

Lol, you should let them try redlight cameras... Usually shorten the yellow lights to go with it.

Easy way to balance the city budget. Reduce the speed limit in town and then put a speed camera right at the city limits and catch them as they're slowing down.

IOW, these cameras aren't much more than a cash cow.

Are the camera fines cutting into the church donations? Separate church & state.

Speed cameras and ethanol in my gasoline formula should be abolished.

They used cameras here in Ontario for a while and then pulled them all out. Too many problems. A lot of people were wrongly ticketed. So I agree with these ministers.

Everyone who says that speeding is wrong and illegal should take a long, hard look at whether or not those speed limits that they're talking about are appropriate for the design and condition of the road.

Speed cameras make roads more dangerous because people slow down for them and then speed right back up again.
