New CAFE Rules Anger Just About Everyone

Forbes - Dave Hurst, Contributor -- The Obama administration announced new fuel economy rules last week requiring that vehicles reach 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. Typical of the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) rules, there are many credits offered for different types of vehicles based on their drivetrains, encouraging automakers to make and sell alternative drive and alternative fuel vehicles. The effort to tighten CAFE standards has been the epitome of government sausage making. The process required not only getting Republicans and Democrats to agree on something, but also getting environmentalists and, more importantly, auto manufacturers to agree on something that no party really likes. Remember a) its based on old mpg testing methods that are 20% higher than what's used now b) there will be credits for technology to boost it & c) loopholes will abound, just like the current one of make gas-hungry vehicles flex fuel (no one can consistently use E80) & it won't count against your CAFE avgs.

This will be good for all of us using less fuel used and more money in your pocket. If you want to pay out a hundred bucks every time you fill up good luck with that, fuel is not going to get a lot cheaper, no matter who is in the White House.

Thanks to vehicles that deliver high mpg (including hybrids, EVs, etc.), the gas tax dollars going to the feds & state govts have been declining. The politicians WILL find ways to make up that "shortfall", rather than cut their own wasteful spending. In short, we'll be paying, no matter what!

Gas will likely be $10.00 a gallon or more by then. A solution to higher pump prices is better mileage so you can drive a given distance without spending more per trip.

The rate at which gas prices have been going up the last 4 years, I don't even want to think about how much it will be in 2025. If these rules ever do make it to law, then the gas savings will probably never make up the extra cost that we will be paying for a new car. Another issue to think about...we'll be buying less gas which means less taxes to the government, but they still wants our money, so we will be paying mileage taxes or something along those lines. The cost to drive in 20-30 years will be astronomical!

The higher mpg figures are a great way to lower our costs for driving our cars. If you are against higher mileage, there are probably a few 1970-era clunkers you could probably find on used car lots.
