New Recycling Technique Enables Spent Nuclear Fuel Rods to be Used Again

Oilprice.com -- The main reason why so little of the uranium is used in the fuel rod is that most nuclear plants use light-water reactors (LWR) which are relatively safe and cheap, but very inefficient at using all the available energy in the fuel rod.

Scientists at the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory think they have found a way to access the remaining 95% of the uranium in the fuel rod. Their technique could produce hundreds to thousands of years worth of carbon free energy just by reusing the uranium that has already been mined, and is currently considered ‘spent’.

The native americans impacted by the drive to find uranium (they got the toxic wasteland to prove it) might be happy that recycling is a new option..... Now if the businesses that created the toxic mess would clean up their "gift" to the tribes...

Sure Nuclear power is cheap. But nuclear power is also quite hazardous. We certainly do not to experience another Three Mile Island meltdown.

The technology for recycling fuel rods has been around for a while, we just don't have access to it because of our Cold War Nuke treaties with Russia.
