reduce energy consumption, then the existing plants go further.

we need more diversity of energy sources. Cleaner coal plants are a start, but need different sources.

As stated earlier (Message Posted: Aug 23, 2012 10:35:08 PM), there is NO REASONING with the extreme greenies, because they are blinded by their "false religion". The remainder of the numb-numbs have been duped into believing that man CAN and actually DOES affect climate change and that CO2 is "bad" for our environment.
The key to all of this is a Congress which (if the Congressmen have the cojones) will stand up to the Federal EPA or (preferably) ABOLISH it altogether. Then the individual states will be able to deal with their environmental concerns as THEY see fit.
I can visualize our new prosperity if we can regain control of our Federal government and "bind 'em down with the chains of the Constitution". It is not too far fetched and BO knows it.

If the plant meets the latest emission standards, then it is clean!

Clean coal is no myth, only those that would like to continue the elimination (war on) of coal as one of America's energy sources will go on pushing that coal cannot be clean.
When one takes their blinders off they'll see coal plants have, According to the National Energy Technology Laboratory, reduced emissions from modern coal plants by 90 percent for every unit of electricity generated.
Even according to the EPA, emissions of traditional pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act, have dropped significantly - even when the use of coal electric generation had nearly tripled to meet growing demand. Proving the sucesses of clean coal tech. This Virginia plant deploys even newer technologies to capture and store CO2.
And think about it this way, states that use more coal for electricity genration have the lowest cost per KW of electricity. EPA regulations forcing less use of coal are hurting the middle and low income folks the most. Families earning $50K spend about 20% of their after tax income on energy related costs, that percentage only increases for elderly on fixed income and lower income folks as well. Now who is really for the little guy?

Clean Coal? There is no such thing as 'Clean Coal!' Burning coal, bio mass or anything else that burns. Generate more CO2 and other global warming gasses, as if it's hot enough this summer already. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

A state of the art coal fired power plant is better than a dated coal fired plant.

That part of the country really needs a break on coal production and the use of coal-fired power plants.
The EPA should treat that area as a 3rd world country when it comes to regulations.

We need coal plants. We don't have enough alternative energy to power plants with other type of fuels, not withstanding nuclear.

It looks like Dominion is doing a good job to minimize waste. Environmentalists seem to forget that when burning biomass the co2 produced is the same amount as when it breaks down naturally in the rotting process.

A good start.
Coal is such a dirty word yet we need it badly.
Fortunately when oil get over $150 a barrel permanently, we'll find ways to make burning it clean.

It would be nice if science technology could come up with a way to make coal a cleaner alternative to energy. There has to be someone in some lab that could initiate an effort.

Coal is still the most abundant fuel in the country, of course with petroleum and natural gas in close, so it would make some sense too keep using it.

With the really cheap price on natural gas, you have to wonder how long until this plant is converted.
