Nymex oil tops $97, but Brent retreats

MarketWatch -- Oil futures rose Monday, settling above $97 a barrel for the first time in over a week as the dollar pulled back from earlier highs, while Brent crude retreated from highs seen late last week.

Crude oil for March delivery rose $1.31, or 1.4%, to settle at $97.03 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the highest settlement since Feb. 1.

Prices had touched an intraday low below $95 early Monday.

Oil prices turned higher after Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann, a European Central Bank governing council member, said the euro isn’t seriously overvalued and warned governments against trying to weaken the currency.

The comments helped fuel a rally in the euro against the dollar.

Oil has to change hands in dollars and is therefore “sensitive to the dollar volatility," ...

Alaska North Slope Crude is almost $20 more per barrel. It closed yesterday at $115.78 and the North Slope produced 582,072 barrels. Not a bad day!

Oil is way over priced. There will be a large market correction one of these days when the bubble finally bursts.

Oil at these prices do not support $3.65/gal retail gasoline prices. Maybe $3.30/gal, but not more.

Gas at the pump is now $3.50. That's pretty high for crude that's still under $100 a barrel!!

Oil futures rose because of pure speculation. Speculators are driving the price of oil and the cost of gasoline, certainly not supply and demand.
