Ocean Power Gets License for First U.S. Wave-Energy Project

Bloomberg -- Ocean Power Technologies Inc. (OPTT) received permission to build the first commercial wave-power plant in the U.S.

The approval validates the New Jersey-based company’s technology to convert sea motion into electricity and may lead to additional commercial marine-energy projects, said CEO Charles Dunleavy.

“The 35-year term of the license demonstrates the commercial potential of wave power, and this will support initiatives to secure financing for the project,” he said in the statement.

The project comprises 10 PowerBuoys tethered to the sea floor which generate power as waves and tides move them up and down. It will generate enough power for about 1,000 homes, according to Ocean Power.

A waste of a beach and a waste of money. These same wackos gripe 'cause on a clear day you can see oil dericks way off on the horizon in Santa Barbara. Ever see one of these Rube Goldburg Machines?

wait till the fishing industry and native american salmon fisheries see the destruction of their livelihoods, just like the wind turbines are slaughtering birds and bats - never mind the environmental impact statements, nothing to see here, just move along with the rest of the mindless sheep who love "green" energy!

This is awesome. Only about 20 years behind other countries, but still a major step forward.

Wave motion hydro power!

Endless , limited only by our ability to capture it, and clean!

One Part of the motherlode of the simple 4.

Wind, sun, water (hydro) and earth (geo)

I'm betting Solyndra said govt loans validated their technology, too. This validates nothing, becoming profitable will valIdate this venture.

What a flaky way to utilize energy from the ocean current. Why not use some type of turbines instead.

Lots of energy there if it can be captured economically. There are a lot of uninhabited islands out there that need electricity.

This technology has been around for decades. Once the anti-capitalist eco-terrorists get wind of this they will start filing slap suits to stop it. After all the Grunion won't run, or some such make believe fantasy; and that will take precedence over human needs.
