If governments are buying electric and alternative-fuel vehicles, that leaves more gasoline for us civilians. So much the better.

seems govt is doing all the buying, not the average consumer. Nice to see the government wasting our money again.

The Mayor of Indianapolis announced that the city would purchase no more conventional gas vehicles. Most smaller vehicles will be either EV's or plug-in hybrids. Larger trucks will use CNG. Mayor Greg Ballard: City vehicles to use alternate fuels in 13 years
The city’s new goal is to convert the entire city fleet — to electric, natural gas or hybrid vehicles in the next 13 years
Starting now, an executive order signed by Ballard requires that all new vehicles purchased or leased for the city’s fleet, other than police cars, have electric or plug-in hybrid engines. The city also will work to replace heavy-duty trucks, including fire engines, with vehicles that run on compressed natural gas, which is cheaper overall than diesel. Ballard’s motivation is for Indianapolis to do its part, however small, to reduce the United States’ reliance on oil produced in dictatorships — a recurring factor, in his view, behind recent U.S. wars.
“This choice will save lives,” he said. “We will save taxpayer dollars. And we’ll shift the balance of global strategic power.”
Especially if other cities, as Ballard hopes, follow Indianapolis’ lead.

Plug-in electric car sales triple in 2012? If EV's and Inbreds triple in sales just whom is buying them, certainly not the average Joe down the street. When a few vehicles are sold with the total being low to begin with, sales percentage will multiply greatly. 'Coming out of the closet' Sneeky's lousy, smoke and mirrors, lack of jobs, dog and pony show and in the crapper economy, the jobs are Not here. Sneeky's economy is not improving but continues to hurt the population and the job numbers continue to be down! With time, EV's and Inbreds will improve, the vehicles will get better and maybe they will have a greater driving range, a higher battery storage capacity and a much quicker recharging time. What the future may hold is promising but it's Not for me at this time! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, vehicle manufactures Produce and the population ‘Drives’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

Saying "triple" is a pointless statistic without some real numbers to back it up. If there were 3 electric car sales in 2011 and 9 in 2012, that's triple. It's also insignificant.
Bad job by Scripps Howard News Service.

Sounds more like a lot more people are evaluating their true automotive needs and seeing a way to be more green in their transportation needs. A hybrid might fit my energy needs... but I'm not convinced yet that they will have the longevity to match my 2002 Subaru with 345,000 miles on the original engine.

We don't have answers about the cost of replacement batteries if and when they are needed. The companies should have a cost and how much they will cover.

For this to work, we need to get the R&D paid off and get the economies of scale needed to make them affordable to the average car buyer. Also, there need to be more fast charging stations around (workplaces? restaurants?), or a way for us apartment dwellers to be able to top them off - not everybody has a garage that can be wired. Third, infrastructure is needed to make these good traveling cars as well as commuter vehicles - I want to know that I can charge it up along the way and at my destination, otherwise these things are just "one-trick ponies." (No I don't want to fly somewhere that I can drive in a day, and most of may family is within a day's drive.)
