Sandy might send more than 250,000 cars to scrap heap

Reuters -- Superstorm Sandy may consign as many as a quarter of a million new and used cars and trucks to the scrap heap, a loss that could eventually lead to a spike in new auto sales, automakers and dealers said.

So far, automakers have reported that some 16,000 brand new vehicles will have to be scrapped due to the killer storm that flooded coastal areas in New Jersey and New York. Many of them were stored at the port of Newark when Sandy hit.

Do Not buy a used car unless you know where it came from! This is one way to sell more vehicles, a natural disaster! My current vehicle was paid off many years ago and I don't need any car payments now! I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept and certainly not a Prius, Tesla, Leaf, Volt or an NYC/Sandy Special submerged 'exploding submarine' Fiskar Karma Inbred! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

We feel so sorry for those who are suffering loss as a result of Sandy, not just in relation to cars but overall. There are some folks who are saying that Sandy as a weather system was manipulated or controlled to be far worse than was originally predicted. If that can ever be proven, we wonder if there will be a class action lawsuit against those who caused the destruction. In the meantime, what is happening to gas prices in the Sandy-struck areas?

I wonder if manufacturers had insurance on new and unsold cars that were destroyed. Cars lost in the storm were just a small percentage of the overall destruction.
