The insurance companys will foot the bill for this cash for clunkers, and eventually us with higher premiums.

And as in the aftermath of similar storms, people will be trying to hide the fact their vehicles were under water. Salt water is not your electrical systems friend.

Do not buy used cars unless you know the car and the owner who has had it for awhile. Folks love to sell their misery to someone else to make a buck.

Sandy might send more than 250,000 cars to scrap heap – watch for refurbished and retitled vehicles. Do Not buy a used car unless you know where it came from! This is one way to sell more vehicles, a natural disaster! My current vehicle was paid off many years ago and I don't need any car payments now! I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept and certainly not a Prius, Tesla, Leaf, Volt or an NYC/Sandy Special submerged 'exploding submarine' Fiskar Karma Inbred! Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! XII/XXII/MMXII!

Teamsimmons- they were getting free gas .NOt sure how long that lasted though as it was a limited amount of gas sent there and it was for mostly the utility companies.

Ouch! We feel so sorry for those who are suffering loss as a result of Sandy, not just in relation to cars but overall.
There are some folks who are saying that Sandy as a weather system was manipulated or controlled to be far worse than was originally predicted. If that can ever be proven, we wonder if there will be a class action lawsuit against those who caused the destruction.
In the meantime, what is happening to gas prices in the Sandy-struck areas?

as for the damage covered by insurance companies.....it depends on what totalled the car ..rain ,hail , or sand ...if the owner had physical damage coverage or just liability......you would be SUPRISED at how many people own a new car and DON'T have physical damage coverage!!!!

Buyers beware - some insurance companies turn flood damaged cars over to reburbers in order to recoup losses. Illegal but still done

Methinks that insurance companies will be the biggest losers for Sandy damage to new and used cars. I wonder if manufacturers had insurance on new and unsold cars that were destroyed. Cars lost in the storm were just a small percentage of the overall destruction.
