Study: Arctic thawing is releasing ancient methane

http://www.newsminer.com -- by Jeff Richardson / jrichardson@newsminer.com

FAIRBANKS — After spending the past decade studying the methane that gurgles out of Alaska lakes, Katey Walter Anthony began to see something unusual several years ago.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks researcher noticed that “violent bubbling” at some lakes was creating patches of thawed water in late and early winter. The source of that methane, she later discovered, wasn’t from recent organic decomposition but instead from underground coal beds or petroleum reservoirs.

“That looks like something very different than I’ve seen elsewhere,” Walter Anthony said.

The reason that methane is venting to the surface, according to her team’s newly published article in the journal Nature Geoscience, is because the frozen cap covering that ground

In New Jersey, it smells in the Meadowlands because of the methane.

Let's use the methane in lieu of other fuels!

I read the article right from the source - Fairbanks News-Miner. The story included 3 photographs - one with Katey in a small boat paddling next to a large ice-berg; one showing a large hole in the ice; and a third with a person sitting next to a 6-inch hole in the ice with a small flame burning in the hole. Excellent. That's even more methane than we expected.

It certainly isn't caused by global warming, no such thing, right?

Now we'll have to pass laws to keep dinosaurs from passing emissions.

Talk of this happening started years ago. I guess the scientists were correct. Now that it's happening lets capture and use it.

Capturing the Methane escaping from DC would be a more productive venture. We all know how much BS is in that town

Nitewolf, Thanks so much for posting this article! I'm very familiar with the gurgling explosive stinking methane releases from tons of organic accumulation on the bottom of the Potomac River, but these geologic releases due to increasing heat within our atmosphere are definitely alarming.

If there is any smell that I hate more, it's ancient dinosaur farts. I'll have to go to the UAF Geophysical Institute web site and see if I can locate Katey. I know a few other folks in her building who work for AEIC.
