Synthetic Biology Research: Could Fuel for Cars or Household Power Supplies Be Created from Naturall

ScienceDaily -- Writing in PNAS, the researchers have shown that the emerging field of synthetic biology can be used to manipulate hydrocarbon chemicals, found in soaps and shampoos, in cells.

This development, discovered with colleagues at the University of Turku in Finland, could mean fuel for cars or household power supplies could be created from naturally-occurring fatty acids.

The researchers, led by Professor Nick Turner from The University of Manchester, used synthetic biology to hijack the naturally-existing fatty acids and direct those fatty molecules towards the production of ready-to-use fuel and household chemicals.

sinc many people choose to drink alcohol, let us collect their (high powered) liquid waste and not need gasoline with high octane any more. Supply would be virtually unlimited...AND FREE.

Hydrogen is readily abundant everywhere,
to get it where it can be used as fuel takes a lot of energy
electrolysis of water is the usual method of hydrogen production
and where is the electricity needed going to come from?

I thought that hydrogen was already a viable alternative fuel that is readily available and relatively clean and plentiful? Why are we looking for alternatives and not trying to perfect this fuel?

So, a beer-belly could be a useful thing to have! Just stop at the local LT (lipo-transfer) station for a de-fill, refill!
