AC-302, you are off by a factor of 3. Last year reported lists about 32k fatalities in the US due to collisions. The markets are very comparable. Bluebird, surprised you listed the passive safety systems but left out stability control, an active system probably preventing more accidents rather than just allowing more to survive.

What they do not tell you is what else they will use the data for.

These types of driving aids need to be implemented so that the driver is not inundated with too much information. I'm sure in time personal transportation will be a lot safer and these times we're living in will look simply barbaric to those 100 years from now.

A lot of this stuff just replaces what the driver should be doing anyway. As others pointed out this seems like it just allows people to become lazy and unfocused drivers.

I'm with the like of Budster, its more mkting than science & engineering - as this is a biased lot wanting to sell more electronics on vehicles. It provides no detail or even hint of logic in statements - like ACC & collision warning systems save 3-7% on fuel consumption & not factoring in reduced congestion. HOW??? I can understand if avoid accidents then you save idling fuel of all the cars needing to pass it. ACC does not mean you're travelling slower & Fr. collision warning just means your stopping faster than if driver was paying attn far enough ahead. Other than blind spot warnings, very few of the new tech. actually will have the impact of seatbelts, crush-zones, air-bags or even ABS (which by the way didn't reduce accidents for yrs after they came out for some reason-likely driver error).

Shoot, I thought this article was actually going to say something definitive. But NOOO, just more coming soon or which comes first the chicken or the egg. This consumer thinks the way we market and engineer needs to be majorly changed.

There goes the fun of a Sunday afternoon drive in the country. Nothing is sacred with hi tech removing the joy of living. The best part is that everyone shows up for muster on Monday morning...well, except for those who drank out of 32 ounce cups in NYC and they are in jail.

Wow! Over 30,000 people a year die in Europe on the roads? Gee, we're down to like 10,000 in America. I realize the EU has a larger aggregate populatino than the US, but it's not 3X that of the US. That says to me that cars and roads in Europe are far more dangerous than those in America.

Jmac2008; I find the Euro findings interesting forcing me to think the system over again. I beelieve that we tend (me too) to view newness as badness.

What happen when there is a glitch in the system? Drivers need to be responsible and pay attention to driving and not on cell phones.
