Thousands file claims after Chevron refinery fire

AP -- RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) -- Several thousand Richmond residents have filed legal claims against Chevron Corp., seeking compensation for a refinery fire that fouled the region's air for hours and sent more than 4,000 people to seek medical care for breathing problems and irritated eyes.

Hundreds of residents showed up at a makeshift claim center in Richmond on Friday, and many more submitted claims throughout the week by calling a special hotline Chevron established after Monday's explosion and fire. The company said a total of about 3,800 people had submitted claims through Friday afternoon.

This is why refiners have to close the shop. Or spend millions to "move" to a new location. Hope they have lots of insurance.

How many went to a Doctor first? From what I've heard so far not any.

Greedy bastards. This is just one more reason why I'd never live in California.

Ripping off Chevron, not good - Chevron and others making us pay at the pump for that fire even worse.
That refinery is up in the middle of the state, why are we paying the price hundreds of miles away.
Don't buy the hype, shop for your gas, Oh and if your that rich that you won't shop gas prices send some

Now we know the reason why lawyers are so "green." They were just waiting for one to blow so that they can swoop in and offer the surrounding people their services.

Excellent point hooter.

But people do all these things without thinking and then cry later on.

Towns and cities allow the developers to do as they please so this is what we get. Lawyers love this.

The refinery was there before the homes were built. If you don't like airplanes, don't move next to an airport. If you don't like refineries and their associated smells, don't move next to one.

Operational short cuts in maintenance and safety always lead to problems and so called 'accidents'. No matter the result, the consumer ultimately pays the bill.
