Two injured after car falls down Manhattan garage elevator shaft

NBC News -- A car fell down a New York City garage elevator shaft Tuesday morning, injuring two people, the fire department said.

The victims were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.

A parking attendant was driving into the elevator on the fifth floor of the garage around 9:45 a.m., but when he pulled in, the elevator car wasn't there, NBCNewYork.com reported. As the car plunged down, it injured a worker on a lower floor.

Firefighters had to extricate the driver from the vehicle. An FDNY spokesman told msnbc.com both he and the other garage employee were taken to Cornell Medical Center in stable condition.

The garage, which also serves as a Hertz rental location, is on East 76th Street near First Avenue in Manhattan.

No gas used on the way down. Wonder if the valet driver had an operators license?

I think I'll pass on the valet parking.

It strikes me as odd there was no gate or doors mentioned.

IT would be interesting to see why and how that happened. One would expect a number of redundancies in the design such that a car cannot drive in until the elevator is there.

Did this cause the price of fuel to drop in the surrounding areas due to having one less car on the road consuming fuel? I doubt it, another police blotter story that does not even attempt to meet site guidelines.

18:58, Woman reported receiving an odd call on her business line from a mumbling man who identified himself as Frankenstein and made about as much sense as same. 19:21, An officer investigating the strange abandonment of a Ford Bronco in the middle of the roadway was approached by a man whom he believed was the owner of the vehicle, but who was in fact another person who was also missing his Ford Bronco. After the second Bronco-less man helped the officer find the first one, the abandoned Ford was reunited with its rightful owner. The second Ford remains at large.

Agree w/ doeslayersr. Probably most are not especially enlightened relative to gas here. The only really interesting question is how many lawsuits can they come up with and who is going to pay how much? undoubtedly, it will be huge for somebody.

On the other hand, the garage may have a new sign out saying "NOW HIRING COMPETENT WORKERS - WE FIRED THE INCOMPETENT ONES!"

Alas, they don't qualify for a Darwin Award unless the injury left the driver of the car unable to have children.
