Virginia may start an end to gas taxes

Washington Times -- With states across the country facing growing mismatches between their gas-tax revenues and the bills they face to build and repair roads and bridges, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s proposal to junk the state’s gas tax altogether — coupled with an increase in the state’s sales tax rate — represents a radical turn.

All 50 states have gas taxes, which provide about 40% of highway funds — but many are scrambling in the face of a fiscal squeeze: With modern cars getting more MPG and Americans on average driving 6% less miles per year than they did a decade ago, the traditional tax on gas at the pump isn’t bringing in what it once did, even as the nation’s infrastructure bills increase.

That means that a person who has a 30 mpg aveo pays same tax as someone driving a 2 mpg motor home!

Its fine if government also fixed its spending, which would include salaries, raises, perks, all the specials alloewd legislators, etc, etc... All governmeny likes to spend what it does not have. legislators, unlike most regular taxpayers, usually do not look to really cut down on their personal spending (naturally, they are taxpayer supported.

The poor have to buy gas to get to work... they buy their share and get taxed apportionately. Tax the ELITISITs Electric vehicles who are not paying their share of fuel tax. Shoot just call it a transportation tax. Base it on miles driven, that's fair, just tax gas burners, different from non-petrol related fueled vehicles. My first impression is that the higher sales tax will add to the burden of the poor, most of whom buy very little, if any, gasoline.
