What not to say when pulled over by a cop

Wall Street Journal - MarketWatch -- CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- In what he calls an "educational video" that's widely circulated on YouTube, comedian Chris Rock offers advice on what to do when you get pulled over for a traffic violation.

"Obey the law" he says. "Stop immediately" and "stay in your car with your hands on the wheel." Finally, "if your woman is mad at you, leave her at home. There's nothing she'd like to see more than you getting your [you-know-what] kicked."

Click to Play Job loss means 401(k) choicesLaid-off workers need to decide how to best invest the assets in their 401(k) plans.
It's a dead-on spoof of a hard truth: Respect authority. If you don't, you increase the odds of a pricey ticket.

The best advice that I could give, if you are passing through Perry, Georgia (Besides getting through there as quickly without speeding) is don't offer any incriminating testimony to the enforcement officer. This stretch of I-75 in Georgia is known for it's "speed traps" and other revenue enhancing methods.

What do you suppose is the percentage of people they deal with, are idiots ?

Just be honest and polite.

What's wrong with just being civil? If you believe the Officer is wrong the time to press your point is not now, but in front of the judge. Just make sure you have all of your facts straight.

Don't lie, either. Cops are trained to note the human characteristics of lying, including twitching and looking to the left, and they know the right questions to ask to suss out the truth. I thought when you get pulled over, you are looking to the left since that is where the cop is going to be standing when he asks for you license and registration. So basically don't look at the cop or you might be lying?

I'd say this article is 80% inaccurate. In my experience, 66% of cops are corrupt and WILL lie. After all, it's always your word against theirs and the judge will always take theirs first. Not much you can do.

With that said, it's good to respect them just as you would anybody else with no assumptions or prejudices. If they are corrupt, you're screwed from the getgo anyways. If they aren't, respecting them as a human being will get you respect. Either way, it's good to be calm and respectful.

Don't say anything unless asked a question. Usually it's "Do you know how fast you were going"? just say "Yes". If it's "How fast were you going"? tell them 5-10 miles slower than you were actually going.

So a comedian is a cop psychologist. About issuing warnings, does not take into consideration the small hic town barneys that pull as many as they can over and write everyone a max fine ticket because it is their quota to help support income for the local imbred government.

I've never argued with a cop, have never had one be anything but respectful to me, and in my fifty years of driving I have never gotten a ticket that I didn't deserve.

It didn't mention to admit your mistakes and take responsibility instead of blaming someone else. You might just get a warning instead of a citation.

Uh you want my license and such??? Can you hold my beer for me??

Why are you asking if I have been drinking?? Did I ask you if your eyes are "GLAZED"?? (as in eating glazed donuts)

....and from Cheech & Chong, "my license man---ain't it on the bumper man"??

I have been pulled over for speeding many, many times. Being courteous and honest is the best response, most likely resulting in a warning. The one time I argued with the trooper ended with a $150 ticket.
