Why Consumer Reports and J.D. Power Are So Different

NY Times -- When Consumer Reports issued its 2012 Annual Auto Reliability Survey on Monday, the big news was that Ford had slid once again in the rankings, coming to rest in 27th place out of 28 brands included in the analysis.

That news also placed a focus on Jaguar, which was at the bottom of the list for the second consecutive year.

It all seemed so clear, unless one was also familiar with several studies done by J.D. Power & Associates, the market research firm.

Then one might say: “Wait a minute. I thought Jaguar had done well recently.”

And it had done well in one of those studies. The J.D. Power 2012 Initial Quality Study put Jaguar in the No. 2 spot (tied with Porsche) just behind the first-place Lexus.

If that seems puzzling in light of the Consumer Reports study, it can also seem strang

Intended audience plays a large part of these reports. Different viewpoints and purposes.

I don't pay attention to any of them.

This just shows you when you go to make a large purchase do your homework. Look at it from all sides. Not just one source.

Sounds like Consumer Reports does a better analysis. J.D. Power? What? Do they expect car owners to only own a car for 90 days?

As usual, most posters don't even bother to read the article.

And some are just posting for points, cluttering the topic up with noise.

I take their reports with a grain of salt, and not much more. Consumer Reports I have read on other topics and again I go OK and thats it.

I never use them. Probably should do some research, but for the past ten years I have the dealer let me know when this one family trades. Car usually has less then 20,000 on them and complete maintenance records including fuel record. I talk to the previous owner and so far I have been very pleased with the cars I buy.

On a survey the first question asked of the company, is what result do you want? the same for statistics.

Great information to have for consumers who are considering purchasing a vehicle. The more information available to a consumer, the more it increases the chance the consumer will make a purchasing decision he/she can live with.
