Will Jeep lovers blaze a new trail for diesel?

Automotive News -- Even though fuel prices have generally fallen in recent weeks -- outside of areas ravaged by superstorm Sandy -- there are more than a few consumers out there who would line up to gladly pay $1 more per gallon or more to get what they want.

And what they want -- these few, these happy few -- are diesel-powered Jeep SUVs that are legal to drive anywhere in the United States.

Chrysler Group's go-anywhere brand will answer these petitions early next year when it begins selling Jeep Grand Cherokees in North America outfitted with a highly regarded 3.0-liter diesel engine currently used in Europe.

No real reason for it other than money making scheme.

If Jeep is successful in this offering, you can bet GM, Dodge and Ford will follow suit in their lines of SUVs and 1/2 ton pickups.

The only disappointing thing regarding this is BMW already have a production engine that can produce 190hp/112nm from ~999cc. So like always car manufactures will always hold back and essentially dip feed this tech to us. PS: Formula 1 and 1600cc Turbo will show the way in 2014/15 i.e. Jaguar 1600cc 500hp a la C-X75 is the real world example. People fret at the thought of losing the noise of a NA V8; wait till you feel the thrust & agility of a 1400cc@350hp in a 700kg frame. People must realise this tech is available among car manufactures today however they choose to release it tomorrow. MONEY!!!

I would love to have some alternatives to the German car manufacturers for Diesel. VW (Toureg), Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc all want far too much for their diesels. I believe this Jeep will do well in Canada.

For reference, check out the Mercedes Benz GL which comes in a diesel and 2 gas models: GL 350 with 3.0 V6 (Diesel) makes 455 lb-ft of torque, 26 mpg highway GL 450 with 4.6 V8 (Gasoline) makes 416 lb-ft of torque, 19 mpg highway The diesel will run nearly forever, makes more torque, and gets nearly 37% more miles per gallon. Diesel fuel is currently only ~ 11% more per gallon than regular unleaded.

All diesel pumps also have fuel spilled all over the ground. Who wants to step in that goop and then wipe it on your fancy floor mats. That smell is near impossible to get off your shoes let alone out of a carpeted floor mat. Go take a sniff around a big truck and you'll know what your new Jeep is going to smell like forever.

The price of diesel would be a factor.

They will gauge their customers thoughts and feelings on the idea, then go from there.
