ZBB Energy Corp ships $1M system to Navy

Journal Sentinel -- ZBB Energy Corp. has shipped an energy storage system to the U.S. Navy, an order valued at more than $1 million.

The company said Tuesday the energy storage system, or EnerSystem, will be used in an island microgrid that will combine battery power with renewable energy and diesel generators.

The system, including a power and energy control system as well as 20 of ZBB's zinc bromide flow batteries, will be installed at the San Nicolas Island Naval Facility in the Catalina Islands off the coast of Los Angeles.

During the next two years, ZBB said, the EnerSystem will be tested to see how the system performs in delivering power from a combination of sources, including wind turbines and diesel generators.

The Navy is considering deployment in other island settings such as Guantanamo Bay and

"in the Catalina Islands off the coast of Los Angeles"

Um, there is ONE "Catalina Island". There has never been a military presence there except during the Civil War (yes, I know, seems WAY far from the war we all think of) and WWII. I think he meant Channel Islands. The Navy owns San Clemente Island, southwest of Santa Catalina Island

Now there are many people who posted negative comments about this. Think about what it takes to get energy to an island with NO fresh water other than the average 5 1/2 of rain a year. The only way to get water is by tanker or reverse osmosis on sea water to make fresh water - a very power hungry process. Producing and storing power locally is a far better concept than transporting diesel fuel and running generators for every watt you use.

A $1M system is nothing for a contract with the Navy or any other branch of the military... and $1B is just a small contract.

Petrock said: "Our tax dollars hard at work once again. At least the greenie industry is doing well even if the rest of us are unemployed!"

Who said the greenie industry is doing well? This looks like another attempt by the Obozo administration to prop up a greenie company, only to see it eventually fail. We've seen it happen with Solyndra and other companies, as well as Obozo's attempt to bolster Chevy Volt sales by getting the military to buy them. If "doing well" means having a chunk of taxpayer money thrown at your feet before you go out of business, then I suppose I could agree with that assessment.

Let me see if I have this straight; the U. S. Navy is spending $1 Million TAXPAYER Dollars to TEST a product for a Private For-Profit Corporation. Well then, isn’t that special!
